Harpanahalli is located at 14.8°N 75.98°E. It has an average elevation of 633 meters (2076 feet). Harapanahalli is the third biggest town in Davangere district next to Harihar. Davangere district being the heart of the state, Harapanahalli is situated at its center being heart/center Taluk in the whole state. Harapanahalli is one of the oldest trading centers since the Madras presidency apart from the Education Center. The Nearest Railway Station is Harapanahalli(1.5 km)which is inaugurated in March 2014.
Harapanahalli is quite famous for its well known educational institutions and is home to several schools and colleges which makes it to stand different in terms of literacy.
There are more than 30+ Primary Schools and 5+ high schools,4+ pre-university, and first-grade colleges located in the city along with a Pharmacy College for all level which draws student from far other states from North India to the Harapanahalli.
The famous Government Junior college in Harpanahalli is more than 120 years old and was a second oldest college in the then Bellary District, the college was built in British era with the British style of architecture along with local treasure and old court premises which can be still witnessed in the City's heart, every year around 500 new students takes admission in this college to pursue their high school and college education, apart from education college is well known for the sports such as Kho kho, Kabbadi, Volleyball, and athletics, etc. Since Harapanahalli is one of the backward taluk in the Karnataka state, student community comes maximum from rural poverty-stricken areas, Government College which was established in 2007 is the unique opportunity to them, and since its establishment, the Government First Grade College is serving the real public interest under the guidelines of the Department of Collegiate Education of Karnataka.
At present, the Government First Grade College Harapanahalli houses four (4) UG courses, B.A., B.Sc., B.Com & B.B.M. with 1050 students in 2014-15. The permanent faculty members are 12 in number, 03 non-teaching and 32 guest lecturers and 02 unskilled and one watchman. Top priority is given to achieve and ensure academic excellence and professional skills.
The Government First Grade College Harapanahalli works according to the calendar of events prescribed by the Davanagere university. Information with regard to the various processes like admission, examination, evaluation, library, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, N.S.S,Indian youth Redcross, Scouts and guides,fee structure, Spiritual values, healthy practices, are disseminated to the students at the Orientation program conducted on the commencement of the academic year. Internal tests, project work and practical, labs are conducted during the course of the semester.
The Government First Grade College Harapanahalli had a training and placement cell, which provides the students the skill development programs. The college participates in Sahayog (Jobmela) which was initiated and implemented by the Commissioner of Collegiate Education by authorizing corporate trainers. Our college students were recruited in the multinational, public, private, sector and nationalized banks, to the extent of 50 in number in the previous year.
Workshops on spoken English by the Department of English, students were taken care in all respects through Student Welfare Officer and students' problems/ grievances are solved through students grievance cell. The SC/ST, category I students and other backward class students were provided with a boarding facilities through the Social Welfare Department.
The Government First Grade College Harapanahalli has a very good library with more than 9500 books related with different subjects and students are provided with sufficient copies of books. The Government First Grade College Harapanahalli is geared up to meet global challenges as our service conditions are governed by the Karnataka state Civil service rules.
The Government First Grade College Harapanahalli’s College Development Council is formed under the chairmanship of the sitting respected MLA of Harapanahalli constituency, and the CDC members list is approved by the respected District Minister. The Principal of the college is the convener for Co-ordinating internal activities of the college, the chairman of the quality assurance cell, Principal, constitutes various committees of Internal Quality Assurance Cell for the smooth and effective functioning of the institution.
